The spring term at the RNCM has been flying by! At the end of January, I was delighted to work with renowned soprano Nelly Miricioiu on Mozart repertoire. And February marked my first performance in the Opera Theatre as part of the College’s Opera Scenes. I performed as Blanche de la Force in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, alongside Georgia Gardiner as Soeur Constance and Eleanor Watts as Mère Marie de l’Incarnation.
The scenes, which were directed by Garth Bardsley, conducted by Chloé van Soeterstède and accompanied on piano by Russell Medley, were taken from act II of the opera: Mère Marie and Blanche have just witnessed the death of the former Prioress.
It was a fantastic learning experience and a great pleasure to work with everyone involved. It was also exciting to discover more about the context of the opera and about Poulenc and the beautiful simplicity of his writing. The language coaching, direction and musical direction we received was extremely useful and I can’t wait to put this into practice in future performances.
Many thanks to all those who came to watch us – and congratulations to the other singers on their brilliant scenes!
