In autumn 2014, I was fortunate enough to take part in a student masterclass with Roderick Williams and Iain Burnside, organised as part of the St Andrews Voices Festival. Each October, Voices hosts a fantastic array of musical events in St Andrews, ranging from choral and operatic performances to song recitals and composition workshops.

The Festival has recently launched an initiative called ‘Supporting Voices’, providing members of the public with brilliant opportunities – such as meeting directors and performers, priority booking for events and attending private receptions – in exchange for their financial support.

As part of the launch event in late May, I was invited to perform a short programme of songs and arias at the beautiful Rufflets Hotel, just outside St Andrews. The programme, accompanied by Jakub Gutkowski, included works by Menotti, Schubert, Gluck and, for purely sentimental reasons, Liszt (I performed “Oh! quand je dors” at the 2014 masterclass!).

It was a pleasure both to perform and to meet the members of the public who so kindly donate their money to support young musical talent in St Andrews. I give my heartfelt thanks to all those who came along!
